WHAT CHANCE FERGUSON PLEDGES TO FIGHT FOR ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE OF HD71:
(click below to see more detail)
TO RESTORE A VOICE TO THE BIG COUNTRY
For at least four years, HD 71 has been left without a functioning state office after the current representative shuttered it and never looked back. Combined with a pattern of compromising on our values to cross party lines on critical votes, it has become clear that the people of this district have not been heard, respected, or represented.
I am running to change that. I will fight to return a strong, steady voice to HD 71. On day one, I will reopen the HD71 State Representative’s office in Abilene so our community once again has direct access to its elected leadership. I will stand firm as a true conservative Republican, and I will carry the concerns, values, and priorities of the people—“We The People”—into every vote and every decision.
TO LOWER PROPERTY TAXES
Right now, county appraisal districts are legally allowed to hike the value of your home by 10–20% every year, depending on your homestead status—and they push those increases to the limit each and every year. Families are being squeezed, retirees are being priced out, and hardworking homeowners are carrying a burden that keeps getting heavier.
I will stand up for homeowners and push back against runaway appraisal practices. Once elected, I will fight relentlessly to drive down property taxes and put real protections in place so the people of our district can keep what they’ve earned and stay in the homes they’ve built.
TO IMPROVE WATER & INFRASTRUCTURE
For years, HD 71 has been forced to endure deteriorating roads, aging bridges, and an increasingly fragile water supply. County and city roads are in severe disrepair, critical bridge systems in the counties need thorough inspection and reinforcement, and our region continues to suffer from longstanding water shortages—with the new reservoir still a decade or more away. As more residents move into our district, these already‐strained systems will face even greater pressure.
As your advocate in Austin, I will fight assertively for the resources our community deserves. I will work to advance water security initiatives and champion programs designed to strengthen, restore, and modernize our infrastructure so the people of the Big Country are no longer left carrying the burden alone.
TO RESTORE
HEALTHCARE CHOICE
Texas currently ranks near the bottom nationally in healthcare—45th to 50th, depending on the metric. Despite these already alarming conditions, the sitting representative for HD 71 disregarded direct warnings from the Federal Trade Commission, which cautioned that allowing Hendrick Health System to acquire Abilene Regional Medical Center would mirror harmful monopolies seen elsewhere in the country and would devastate local communities.
Against that federal advisement, he supported and facilitated the creation of the very monopoly our district now suffers under. The consequences have been predictable and severe: rising healthcare costs for families, diminished quality of care, suppressed wages for nurses and medical staff, and a stark reduction in competition—leaving our region vulnerable and underserved.
As the next representative for HD 71, I will fight to dismantle the stranglehold that has been allowed to form over our healthcare system. I will work to restore competition, improve access to quality care, and ensure that every resident in the Big Country receives the fair, ethical, and competent medical treatment they deserve.
TO IMPROVE PUBLIC EDUCATION
Texas sits only in the middle of the pack of national education rankings, and the students of HD 71 deserve far better. As your representative, I will fight relentlessly to elevate our schools and strengthen the future of every child in the Big Country.
I will push for competitive, honorable salaries for our teachers—professionals who carry the weight of shaping the next generation. I will champion expanded partnerships with technical and trade programs so that students who do not pursue college still have clear, achievable pathways into skilled careers and entrepreneurship, building a stronger local workforce and economy.
I will work to protect our children by seeking increased school-safety funding and advancing meaningful antibullying initiatives that ensure every student has a secure and supportive learning environment. In addition, I will stand with our military recruiters by ensuring high school students receive accurate information about career opportunities and the educational benefits that service can provide.
As your voice in Austin, I will fight for educational systems that empower families, uplift communities, and secure a brighter future for every student in HD 71.
